Increases in Residential and Public Construction to Spur End-of-Century Growth
Aggregates production will hit new highs in 1998 and 1999 after posting slight decrease in 1996 and 1997, according to The CIT Group/Capital Equipment Financing Aggregates Outlook 1996-1999 released today. The outlook forecasts that in 1997, aggregates production will be 2.310 billion short tons, 2 percent below the 1995 all-time peak; however, in 1999, production is forecast to reach a record 2.520 billion short tons.
"The principal reason behind the new term correction in aggregates production is a weakening housing market which is the result of higher interest rates and a near complete release of pent-up demand," said Michael R. Paslawskyj, vice president of Economic Research for The CIT Group. "For example, total real expenditures on residential construction fell 4.3 percent in 1995 and is expected to fall another 4 percent through 1997."
However, the report forecasts that lower interest rates and renewed pent-up demand in 1998 and 1999 will spur residential construction while continued growth in public construction will help to offset the near term weakness in private construction, all of which will prove positive for aggregates production.
