SAWS AND SAW BLADES

"No foot pedal pressure or saw head height adjustments are required when cutting with the Higgins Jig," says Brian Delahaut, VP of MK Diamond. "Both hands stay on the jig while cutting, there is no switching of hands between pushing the cutting table and controlling the saw head height. The saw blade and cutting head stay locked at a constant height at all times."

Higgins adds, "The original conception of the jig came about after our insurance agent saw the number of blades across the 30 saws we had in our factory, and the amount of fingers that came too close to those blades every day. So, we had no choice but to come up with something that wasn't putting our employees at risk. Once the original jig was made, we not only realized how much safer the sawing became, but how much more productive it was."

Productivity

The increase in productivity provided by the jig is immense. The patent-pending design allows for a two-step process for cutting right angle corners, paver corners and lintel corners. When compared to the usual four- or five-step process, the Higgins Jig can reduce cutting time to just eight to 10 seconds, depending on the type of material being cut.

Product Spotlight

Cordless Jig Saw

Metabo Corp. has released a cordless jig saw, the STA 18 LTX, which is part of the company's PowerMasterSeries of 18 V lithium-ion cordless power tools. The saw can cut more than 98 feet of chipboard with just one battery pack charge, and is ideal for use in cutting openings for heating duct and plumbing, cabinet fitting, drywall fitting, cutting and sizing plywood or cutting duct openings in HVAC applications.

The STA 18 LTX features a low-lying saw blade support roller for exact blade guidance, a four-stage adjustable orbital blade stroke and positive bevel cutting stops at 15, 30 and 45 degrees. The tool also includes Metabo's Quick too-Hess blade change system that saves time and energy when replacing blades, increasing productivity and lowering overall cost. The STA 18 LTX jig saw can cut a maximum thickness of 5 5/16 inches in wood, 1 3/8 inches in non-ferrous metals, and 10-gage inches in sheet metal. It features Varlospeed electronics producing up to 2,700 strokes per minute, a protective guard, and anti-splinter insert to prevent chipping when working on brittle materials like laminate countertops.

Safety features include an ergonomic, rubber-coated, full-grip, bow-type handle for user comfort, an adjustable blower for a debris-free view of the cutting line, and an integrated LED work light for optimum illumination of the cutting line.
