A major piece of downtown Port Perry’s streetscape is slated for masonry restoration after the Township of Scugog approved a Heritage Conservation District Grant of up to $30,000 for the commercial building at 179 to 191 Queen Street.
The building, originally constructed in 1884, will undergo facade work aimed at keeping its historic character intact. The township says the scope includes repointing the masonry, selectively replacing bricks using historically appropriate materials, and preserving original architectural details.
The restoration is also meant to address structural concerns tied to weathering and freeze-thaw cycles. Township officials noted loose and deteriorating bricks as a key issue, and said completing the work will help stabilize the building while supporting public safety.
Although the 2026 Heritage Conservation District Grant budget is already committed to two other projects, the township is using unused 2025 capital funding to support this work. Council approved an exception for up to $30,000, citing the building’s significance and the applicant’s prior engagement with the program.
Work is expected to be completed in 2026, and the township says the project team will aim to minimize disruption during the peak summer tourism season. Property owners within the Downtown Port Perry Heritage Conservation District are eligible to apply for the grant program.
