MSJC News

Words: Phillip Samblanet
The Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC), charged with the development and maintenance of structural design and construction provisions for masonry elements, is seeking members to serve on its committee and subcommittees for the 2008-2011 code cycle.

Those interested in being considered for service on the MSJC are requested to fill out the application, available on The Masonry Society (TMS) website at www.masonrysociety.org, by March 1, 2007. Members will be expected to attend biannual meetings at various locations, and to have Internet access and an e-mail address, since most MSJC communications and balloting will be carried out electronically. The committee membership is expected to be finalized in the spring of 2007, with the first official meeting of this new committee expected for November 2007 in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Diane B. Throop, incoming MSJC chair, is currently working with her newly formed steering committee to begin preparations for the 2008-2011 MSJC code cycle. Throop named Dr. David I. McLean of Washington State University as vice chair for the MSJC, and Gerald (Andy) Dalrymple of Whitlock Dalrymple Poston and Associates Inc. as MSJC secretary. The following have also agreed to serve on the steering committee: Richard M. Bennett, University of Tennessee; David T. Biggs, Ryan-Biggs Associates PC; Andy Dalrymple, Whitlock Dalrymple Poston and Associates Inc.; David I. McLean, Washington State University; John M. Melander, Portland Cement Association; Jason J. Thompson, National Concrete Masonry Association; and Scott W. Walkowicz, Ledy Design Group Inc. The new steering committee is preparing for the 2008-2011 code cycle, discussing major issues that must be addressed, committee membership and critical leadership positions for subcommittees.

Additional details on the reformation of the MSJC for the 2008-2011 code cycle will be posted on TMS's website as it becomes available. For more information about the MSJC, e-mail Diane Throop at dthrooppe@aol.com.
