Report of the MCAA TEAM Awards Committee

Words: Elizabeth ApeldoornOn September 10, 2009 the MCAA Board and committee chairmen met at the MCAA headquarters to discuss the reintroduction of the Excellence in Masonry competition. Elizabeth Beber, committee chairman, was in attendance via Conference Call. The board directed the committee to determine where and when the competition’s award banquet would occur, as well as instructing the committee to create a plan to change the name and revitalize the competition.

The TEAM Awards Committee will hold one meeting at the Midyear Meeting, in addition to all additional meetings required to create a successful TEAM Awards competition and banquet at the 2011 World of Concrete. Tim O’Toole will continue to serve as the staff liaison for this committee. The Marketing Committee will assist the TEAM Awards Committee where needed to make this program a success.

The TEAM Awards Committee (formerly Excellence in Masonry) was formed and held it’s first meeting via Conference Call on January 7, 2010 and January 15, 2010. In these meetings, the following decisions and actions have occurred:

Goal of TEAM Awards Committee

To plan and carry out a successful TEAM Awards competition and awards ceremony to promote the masonry industry and recognize award winning architect general contractors, masonry contractors, owners, and associate members.

TEAM Awards Date and Location

Advantages and disadvantages of having the Awards Banquet at the World of Masonry or the Midyear Meeting were discussed. The board unanimously determined to have it at the 2011 World of Masonry in Las Vegas. The exact date, time, and location are to be determined at a later date.

Change of Name

The former name of the competition, Excellence in Masonry was changed to Tribute to Exemplary Achievements in Masonry (TEAM) Awards in order to give the contest a fresh new look due to the former competition’s decline in it’s final years.

TEAM Awards Flyers

Flyers for the contest are available during the TEAM Awards committee meeting, as well as the Annual Meeting at the World of Masonry. Tim O’Toole created these flyers, with the help of Jeff Buczkiewicz.

Special Awards

Special Awards will be awarded for the communities, architects, college/university, and school district for their use of masonry design. The committee will determine the names and criteria for these special awards. In addition to this, the judging panel can give special recognition awards for projects that deserve recognition but do not receive a TEAM Award in their category.

Year Ahead

The TEAM Awards Committee will continue to redevelop and revitalize the TEAM Awards competition into a successful competition and awards ceremony to promote the masonry industry and recognize award winning architect general contractors, masonry contractors, owners, and associate members. The Committee is committed to making this event a success for MCAA.
