The SkillsUSA Arizona Competition was held April 20, 2011.
A total of 16 high school students and four AMCA third-year Apprentices showed up at the Phoenix Convention Center to compete in the 2011 SkillsUSA Arizona Championships on Wednesday, April 20, 2011. Winners from this statewide competition will go on to compete at the national level in Kansas City, Missouri in June.

AMCA Apprenticeship Chairman, Mike Summers with Top Quality Masonry was on hand to oversee the Masonry competition, along with the Executive Director, Lori Maximenko, and other industry professionals who helped judge and run the competition.

The projects given to students this year were the most challenging yet. “These students have to be prepared for the national competition in June, so we don’t go lightly on them when it comes to the state level competition,” shared Mike Summers.

High School competitors came from all around the state, including EVIT (East Valley Institute of Technology) in Mesa, Metro Tech in Phoenix, Santa Rita High School, Centennial, Canyon Oro, Casa Grande Union, Queen Creek and Canyon State Academy. Winners from the high school level included:

1st Place: Landon Boren — EVIT
2nd Place: Gerardo Zerate - EVIT
3rd Place: Austin Sanchez - Canyon Oro High School

AMCA 3rd Year Apprentice winners included:

1st Place: Simon Cruz - CJS Enterprises
2nd Place: Galdino Lucio - Sutter Masonry
3rd Place: Filiberto Granados - G & G Enterprises
