The Rocky Mountain Masonry Foundation has announced the winner of the Building Restoration Specialties (BRS) Scholarship, which recognizes the most talented and dedicated architecture student interested in preserving and expanding the use of masonry in the Rocky Mountain Region. Patrick Gehlhoff, a student at the University of Colorado in Denver, was selected to receive the $2,500 award for use in his graduate work/study program.

The scholarship, developed and funded by Denver-based BRS, will help support Gehlhoff during a semester-long internship spent working with the technical director of the Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute.

"I feel very strongly about the importance of preserving and restoring our historic structures properly," says BRS president Rhonda Maas. "This scholarship is just one way to encourage students to specialize in masonry restoration so we continue to have a skilled labor pool to draw from."

As a previous intern architect in Boston, Ma., some of Gehlhoff's responsibilities were to evaluate existing brick masonry conditions for restoration. Through his continued education, he plans to further examine and explore masonry applications, both historic and contemporary.
